Eight families of air crash victims eligible for Socso compensation

PETALING JAYA: Eight families of the 10 victims of the air crash at the Guthrie Highway near Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam, are eligible for Social Security Organisation (Socso) compensation.

One of them will receive survivors’ pension benefit under the Employees’ Social Security Act while six heirs will receive dependants’ benefit under the Act.

“The remaining heir will receive two benefits – survivors’ pension under the Act, and dependants’ benefit under the Self-Employment Social Security Act,” Socso said in a statement yesterday.

On Aug 17, Pelangai assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun and five other passengers on board a Beechcraft 390 Premier I business jet crashed near Bandar Elmina.

Also killed were pilots Shahrul Kamal Roslan and Heikal Aras Abdul Azim as well as Grab driver Sharipuddin Shaari and Foodpanda delivery rider Muhamad Hafiz Muhamad Salleh.

The aircraft was travelling from Langkawi International Airport to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport when it crashed about three minutes before landing.

Meanwhile, Socso said that so far, the families of seven victims had been provided with RM2,000 for funeral arrangements, while the benefits for Muhamad Hafiz are still pending.

“Compensation for Johari’s heirs is being processed under survivors’ pension benefit, while payments for Muhamad Hafiz are being processed under survivors’ pension and dependants’ benefits.

“Compensation payments for heirs of six other victims are being processed under dependants’ benefit,” said Socso.

It added that Idris Abdol Talib @ Ramali did not qualify for benefits as he was a civil servant, while Sharipuddin did not make any contributions to the social security fund.
