Lorry driver remanded over death of woman in KK pile-up


KOTA KINABALU: A lorry driver involved in a seven-vehicle pile-up that took the life of a local woman at Jalan Lintas here has been remanded for five days for further probe.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the 52-year-old man would remain under police custody until this Sunday (Aug 27).

"The remand order started yesterday (Aug 24)," he said when contacted.

"The lorry will also be sent to the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) for checking," he added on Friday (Aug 25).

In the incident on Tuesday (Aug 22), Nicolette Hannah George, 26, died on the scene after being crushed by the lorry in the pile-up at about 6pm.

Her body was extracted from a car by firefighters before she was declared dead at the scene by a medical officer.

There was another lorry involved in the mishap as well as four other cars.

The incident which was recorded on a motorist’s dashboard camera quickly made the rounds on social media the same day.

Meanwhile, Luyang assemblyman Phoong Jin Zhe said he had followed the developments on the case closely, adding he had been informed of the driver’s remand order.

He said he had also followed up with the authorities to ensure such an incident was not repeated.

"May justice be served," he said in his Facebook account.

The Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister had also visited the family during the wake at the family’s residence at Kampung Babah Bunduon in Penampang near here before the burial on Friday (Aug 25).
