Newborn rescued from garbage bin in Melaka, condition stable, say cops

MELAKA: Melaka police are investigating a case, in which a newborn was abandoned in a garbage bin at an apartment in Taman Pantai Emas here.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the baby girl was discovered by a 50-year-old retiree on Wednesday (Aug 23).

He said the man was alerted by his son, who heard a strange sound like a baby wailing from the garbage bin.

Upon checking, he found the newborn, wrapped in a plastic bag and discarded head-down among piles of other rubbish in the bin, he added.

"A police report was lodged at 10.40pm," he said on Monday (Aug 25).

ACP Christopher said four medical officers from Melaka Hospital rushed to the Batang Tiga police station to check on the baby.

"They then brought her back to the hospital for further observation," he said.

He said the baby's umbilical cord was still attached when she was found, and that she is in stable condition.

ACP Christopher expressed hope that the apartment dwellers or nearby residents could provide information to the case.

He also shared a picture of the newborn.

No visible injuries were seen on her, he added.
