Mind the 3Rs, EC warns Pulai, Simpang Jeram candidates

JOHOR BARU: The by-elections for the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat will both have three-cornered fights involving Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional and Independent candidates.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said in a statement that for Pulai, Perikatan candidate Zulkifli Jaafar will go up against Pakatan candidate Suhaizan Kaiat and Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi, who is the Persatuan Keselamatan Pengguna Kuala Lumpur (PKPKL) president.

"The first candidate, Samsudin is an Independent who will be contesting under the key logo.

"The second candidate is Zulkifli from Perikatan and the third candidate is Suhaizan from Pakatan," he said.

In Simpang Jeram, Pakatan's candidate is Nazri Abdul Rahman, Perikatan's Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya and Independent candidate S. Jeganathan.

"The campaign period will now run until 11.59pm on Sept 8.

"The EC has also introduced two campaign enforcement teams in Pulai and one in Simpang Jeram to oversee the campaign process throughout this period.

"All campaign materials are allowed as long as they do not touch on sensitive issues, especially the 3Rs (race, religion, and royalty)," he said, warning that action can be taken under the Election Offences Act.

"We hope that those involved in the election will abide by the rules and ensure a harmonious situation for all," he added.

Earlier, Pulai parliamentary returning officer Miswan Yunus said that he had received the nomination papers from the three candidates at 9.08am and none of the papers had been rejected.
