‘We have the potential to become new Asian digital tiger’

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia can potentially be an Asian digital tiger if it can achieve success in three areas related to digital infrastructure and economy, says Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications and Digital Minister said the nation needs to first provide network coverage to the last 3% of populated areas that still do not have it.

“Secondly, to guarantee or improve the level of cybersecurity and personal data protection,” Fahmi said as reported by Bernama.

“Thirdly, to increase investments and expand the digital economy,” he told reporters after the launch of the #JagaDataKita campaign and Touch ‘n Go eWallet MyCyberShield personal data protection subscription yesterday.

“If these three aspects (can be achieved) with the cooperation of various agencies and parties under the Communications and Digital Ministry, I believe the spillover from this effort can be enjoyed by the people and we will eventually see Malaysia becoming an Asian digital tiger,” he said.

Fahmi said another equally vital fact is that many companies are looking to expand their operations in Malaysia.

“This is also very positive, not just for the digital economy ecosystem in Malaysia, but indirectly making us a hub for these companies to expand in the South-East Asian region and beyond”.

In a separate development, Fahmi said that the Personal Data Protection Department (JPDP) was investigating allegations of a data breach at the Selangor life insurance scheme (Insan).

“I was told that the JPDP is carrying out an investigation,” he added.

Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI Selangor) said in a statement on Thursday that allegations of data related to Selangor residents being leaked was inaccurate.
