IPOH: More breastfeeding-friendly facilities will be equipped in public areas in Perak, says Sandrea Ng (pic).
The Perak local housing and government committee chairman said the facilities will be added to the gender-responsive budget.
"While some malls and rest & relaxation (R&R) areas have designated breastfeeding areas, we admit there is room for improvement.
"Perhaps during the budget preparation, the state will consider the needs of breastfeeding mothers and add more breastfeeding-friendly facilities in recreational areas and public transportation hubs," she said after launching the Perak Breastfeeding Fun Run at the Ipoh at MBI Square here on Sunday (Aug 27).
In 2022, in collaboration with the Finance Ministry, the Gender Budget Group – a coalition of 21 civil society organisations and 18 academics – launched the first cohort of Gender Responsive Budgeting in Practice with representatives from the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry as well as the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry.
On Aug 8, former Federation of Private Medical Practitioners and Associations and Malaysian Medical Association Dr Milton Lum said women should not have to choose between breastfeeding and their jobs. He said Malaysia, which is one of the WHO's World Health Assembly vice presidents, has a duty and responsibility to set an example by "making breastfeeding at work, work".
A gender-responsive budget is a budget that is inclusive for everyone and ensures a gender-equitable distribution of resources by contributing to equal opportunities for all.
Ng added that it is time for local councils to proactively assist breastfeeding mothers.
"Programmes such as the fun runs help promote awareness and understanding.
"Local councils can raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding. The act is not only beneficial for the baby but also helps mothers recover after childbirth.
"When budgeting for the city's development, the local council can have proper planning on how to develop facilities and environment that will help breastfeeding mothers," she added.
