16-year-old boy reverses car into food court

MELAKA: A 16-year-old boy reversed a car into a food court at Tanjung Kling, Pantai Puteri here, sending 13 patrons including children running helter-skelter.

Some of them sustained minor injuries in the 2.43pm incident yesterday, said Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit.

The teenager was behind the wheel after being told by his 51-year-old mother to warm up the vehicle’s engine.

ACP Christopher said their multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) hit another car parked next to it before ploughing into diners at the food court.

“The boy is believed to have accidentally accelerated the vehicle while starting the engine,” he said, adding that 13 patrons were caught in the incident.

The teenager and his family from Seremban, Negri Sembilan, were on holiday here when the accident happened.

The ordeal was captured by the CCTV at the eatery.

ACP Christopher said police are probing the case under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving.

A 21-second video of the incident showing the MPV crashing into customers who were eating at the food court went viral online.
