Three women killed in car crash with lorry in Johor


KOTA TINGGI: A Singapore-registered multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) was involved in a fatal accident with a lorry at KM56.7 along Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang leaving three of its passengers dead.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said the incident occurred near the Cenah palm oil plantation in Bandar Tenggara here at around 1.35pm on Monday (August 28).

“Initial investigation at the scene found that the Singapore-registered Honda Freed MPV was heading from Kluang to Bandar Tenggara while the lorry was from Bandar Tenggara to Kluang.

“The incident occurred when the Singapore MPV wanted to overtake a lorry in front but could not avoid the lorry coming from the opposite direction and the two vehicles collided head-on,” he said here on Monday (Aug 28).

Supt Hussin added due to the impact, three women - two Singaporeans and a Malaysian holding a Singapore permanent residence status - between the ages of 56 and 61 years, died at the scene.

He also said the 59-year-old Singaporean male driver and 49-year-old lorry driver have been taken by ambulances to Kota Tinggi Hospital and Kluang Hospital for medical treatment.

“The victims’ families have identified their bodies and police will be handing them over as soon as possible,” he said adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

The deceased have been identified as 56-year-old Toh Poh Kian along with Soon Moh Tan and Wong Lan Yew, both aged 61 while the survivors are Ong Cheow Lam, 59, and Ahmad Zani Karimon, 49.
