KLANG: The search and rescue (SAR) operation is still ongoing for a ship's crewman who fell overboard in Pintu Gedung Tengah waters on Tuesday (Aug 29).
Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) deputy director (operations) Maritime Commander Mohd Sharenliza Ghazali said the man has been identified as 57-year-old Filipino citizen Peligres Jaime Langusta.
"The victim and another crew member were assigned to lower the pilot ladder and receive the mooring rope from a nearby boat when he fell overboard," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 30).
Cmdr Mohd Sharenliza said the crew of the nearby boat threw a lifebuoy and life jackets to the victim but he could not grab hold of them.
"The crew of the other boat also dived into the sea to help the victim but he (was swept away) by the storm and strong wind," he added.
The SAR is being coordinated by the Johor Baru Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC).
"We deployed a boat with 10 personnel along with assets from the Fire and Rescue Department.
"The operation commenced at 12.30am and search sectors involved the vicinity of Pintu Gedung Island.
"The victim was last seen wearing a yellow raincoat and a white safety helmet when he fell overboard," he said.
