IPOH: A 48-year-old man was sentenced to eight months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here after he was found guilty of threatening his mother with a pair of scissors.

Contract worker V. Kumaran pleaded guilty after he was charged under Section 506 and Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A before judge S. Punitha yesterday.

Kumaran was alleged to have threatened to kill his mother using a pair of scissors at a house in Pesara Klebang Jaya at about 4pm on Sunday.

Kumaran had been upset after his mother refused to loan him some money, as she was left with only RM50 for groceries. However, he proceeded to take the money and returned only RM20.

His mother then told him to stay at home.

As his mother was about to leave the house, Kumaran dragged her to her bedroom and pushed her, causing her to fall down.

The accused then allegedly throttled her before aiming a pair of scissors at her neck, threatening to kill her and himself.

Kumaran was arrested at about 3.20pm the next day.

Lawyer Siti Hajar Hamzah, who represented the accused, said her client loved his mother but had been under a lot of emotional stress.

“He is not married and has been taking care of his mother on his own. He earns about RM60 daily as a contract worker.

“He was stressed as none of his siblings are helping to take care of their mother.

“As such, I hope the court will consider minimal punishment against him,” she added.

Punitha sentenced Kumaran to four months in jail for the charge under Section 506 and another eight months in jail for the second charge.

However, she ordered the jail sentences to be served concurrently from the date of arrest, which was Aug 28, meaning that Kumaran would only have to serve eight months in jail.

DPP Muhammad Fahmi Kamaluddin prosecuted.
