National Day: Unicycle-riding retiree an eye-catching sight

PUTRAJAYA: Eager to express his love for Malaysia, a unicycle-riding retiree drew the attention of the crowd just before the National Day 2023 celebrations began here Thursday (Aug 31).

Scores of visitors flocked to take pictures and videos of 58-year-old Jeffrey Tan as he rode his unicycle effortlessly around the outskirts of the National Day parade while clad in Merdeka-themed sports apparel.

Tan's unicycle in particular was also eye-catching as it lit up with blue, red and white lights, to symbolise the Malaysian flag, as he pedalled.

Tan said he installed the lights himself after buying the unicycle for around RM2,000 a few years ago.

Tan, who reached the parade at 6am from his home in Ampang, said he was ecstatic at the enthusiasm shown by his fellow Malaysians for his outfit.

"I have attended almost every single National Day parade for the past few decades and each time I get more patriotic.

"It's good to see so many fellow Malaysians who are as passionate as me towards the country," he said.
