A PLOT of land measuring 1.2ha has been allocated by the Perak government to relocate SJK (T) Ladang Chengkat Salak in Sungai Siput, Makkal Osai reported.

Preparations are underway to start the construction of the new school, said state executive councillor A. Sivanesan who made the announcement after meeting the school headmaster, board chairman and members of the parent-teacher association.

Enrolment at the estate school had dropped drastically with only 10 Indian families remaining at the plantation. The new location is expected to better serve the community.

> The Madras High Court has ruled that Self-Respect Weddings may be legally officiated by lawyers under the Tamil Nadu Hindu Marriage Act.

Self-Respect Weddings were born from the Self-Respect Movement popularised in South India in the 1920s by EV Periyar and others which sought to free people from caste and faith-based restrictions.

They became a way to break the stranglehold the higher castes had on the power to officiate weddings and allow people to marry who they love instead of just within their caste.
