PETALING JAYA: An investigation is being carried out by the National Registration Department (NRD) on the case of a 21-year-old woman who couldn’t obtain a identity card (MyKad) after the matter was brought up by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
According to the NRD, it had contacted the woman to get further details regarding her MyKad application.
The NRD also said it was aware that the matter was being debated on social media by Malaysians after it was raised by Syed Saddiq on Facebook on Friday (Sept 1) night.
"The NRD would like to request the public not to sensationalise the matter and make incorrect assumptions about government services.
"Our process is always bound by the Federal Constitution and it is in line with present laws to ensure the sovereignty and security of the country," said the NRD in a statement on Instagram on Saturday (Sept 2).
NRD said anyone facing issues concerning citizenship as well as late birth registration, adoption or non-Muslim marriage procedures can seek assistance at any of its offices across the country.
"Applicants are advised to be present without using the services of an agent or middleman because every application and issues faced by an individual may need different solutions.
"To get further information on NRD’s services, the public can always refer to our portal or official social media accounts which always prepares the latest information as guidance," said NRD.
On Facebook, Syed Saddiq said a woman named Melissa couldn’t obtain a MyKad despite being a Malaysian citizen on her birth certificate.
Syed Saddiq claimed that Melissa couldn’t have access to education and she couldn’t compete in state-level sports.
