Sarawak to continue using the ringgit, says Abang Jo

KUCHING: The proposal for Sarawak to use its own currency is only Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi’s personal opinion.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak will continue to use the ringgit, as the issue is complicated and requires comprehensive study.

"It's a very complicated issue, and it was just Nanta's (personal) view. We already have Malaysian currency, so we will continue using it,” he told reporters, after the opening ceremony of the state-level 2023 National Anti-Scam Roadshow here Saturday (Sept 2).

He was commenting on the report on the statement of Nanta, who is also Works Minister, yesterday, which hinted at the possibility of Sarawak introducing its own currency, given the uncertain economic situation in Malaysia.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general made the statement while appearing as a guest on a podcast entitled ‘From Malaya to Malaysia: 60 years’ yesterday. - Bernama
