10 teens arrested over hostel bullying case

KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested 10 teenage boys in connection with a viral video clip of a group of secondary school students bullying their schoolmates in Ranau.

Initial investigations showed that the group had slapped, punched and kicked their schoolmates who had caused problems by vaping in the school dormitory.

Ranau OCPD Deputy Supt Simiun Lomudin said the incident occurred on Aug 3 but the clip was widely shared on social media on Friday.

“It is believed that the group had assaulted their schoolmates as they were upset with them for vaping as it had caused problems to other students staying in the hostel,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Five boys were picked up on Friday and the rest yesterday. They are aged between 15 and 17.

All of them will be released on bail once investigations are completed. The case is being probed under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 506 for criminal intimidation.

A police report on the incident was lodged at 3.30pm on Friday.

In the five-minute clip, at least four boys can be seen being slapped and punched by a group of boys surrounding them.
