JOHOR BARU: Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) plays a crucial role in eradicating poverty in the country, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The Bandar Tun Razak MP and former deputy prime minister said that to date, there are 320,000 AIM Sahabat Usahawan, or micro-entrepreneurs, in the country, comprising single mothers from B40 and B50 groups whose income is RM5,300 and below.
She then said that what AIM is doing is in line with the aims of the unity government
“AIM is close to me as it has started with the effort made by (Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim; I am fully aware of his effort to fight poverty in the country, besides ensuring our children have access to education,” she said.
“Now that he has become the Prime Minister, this effort has become his main agenda, and I believe that he would be proud that the number of registered Sahabat has now grown to more than 320,000 people,” added Dr Wan Azizah, who is the Prime Minister's wife.
She said this during a speech at the AIM Rewang Merdeka Programme at Padang Kampung Pasir, here, on Sunday (Sept 3).
Dr Wan Azizah also said that AIM has also introduced a free tuition programme that has helped 4,400 children of AIM Sahabat nationwide since July last year.
“I hope that all Sahabat will take advantage of this opportunity to send their children to attend this free programme,” she said, adding that AIM will continue to introduce programmes that can benefit their members.
AIM was established on Sept 17, 1987, as a private trust body incorporated under the Trustees (Incorporation) Act 1952 (Act 258).
