Keningau English teacher honoured with Youth Achievement Record

KOTA KINABALU: Keningau Vocational College teacher Dr Sirhajwan Idek has been honoured with the Youth Achievement Record award in the run-up to the Asean Summit in Jakarta.

The English teacher was presented the award by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli on Saturday (Sept 2) at the Asean Future Generation Business Forum.

On receiving the award, Sirhajwan said that the award dignified the teaching profession and was an important career for the younger generation to consider.

This is one of the events on the sidelines of the Asean Summit that will begin on Sept 4 in Jakarta.

The award is being given by South-East Asian youth association GenYouth, which aims to celebrate the achievements and contributions of youths from the region

Sirhajwan was one of eight award recipients from South-East Asian countries to be honoured at the event.

He had been nominated by the Youth and Sports Ministry for the award in recognition of becoming the first Asian to win the International Innovation and Entrepreneurship Excellence in Teaching Award in Paris in 2017.

On Sept 22, 2017, Sirhajwan was picked from a field of eight finalists from Russia, United States, Britain, Germany, Canada, Denmark and Colombia to win the award at the European Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Paris.

As the head of research and innovation at Keningau Vocational College in Sabah, Sirhajwan has guided a total of 700 students and some 100 teachers in the college to present their projects at research conferences and innovation competitions in the country and abroad since 2016.
