Wedding joke becomes reality

SEGAMAT: Norahimah Noor Muhammad, who was killed with her husband and four of their children in a road crash at KM5 of Jalan Segamat-Kuantan here, had joked about taking a last photo of herself at her youngest sister’s wedding reception in Muar on Aug 27.

Her elder sister, Noorhayati Noor Muhammad, 51, said that was the last time she saw Norahimah.

“We were at our mother’s house in Parit Jawa, Muar, for our youngest sister’s wedding reception. She was taking some pictures and said they could be her last.

“And yesterday (Friday), she left us. Other than that, there was nothing strange about her action. Norahimah was a cheerful person, but strict,” said Noorhayati when met by Bernama at the Forensic Medicine Department of Hospital Segamat yesterday.

On Friday evening, six family members in a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) perished in a five-vehicle pile-up.

The crash occurred while Norahimah and her family, comprising husband Amir Ruddin Ismail, 46, and their children, were on their way home from Ladang Tereh Utara, Kluang, to Felda Kemedak, Segamat.

The remains of the six family members were laid to rest at the Ubudiah Islamic Cemetery, Parit Jawa here yesterday.

Noorhayati said she heard about the road crash on the television and from newspapers, but did not have the slightest thought that it involved her own sister and family.

“We were stunned when we found out through messages on WhatsApp that those killed in the crash were my sister, Norahimah, 43, along with her husband and children.

“I’m still in shock. This is the first time any of our family members have died in a road crash. Although she left us in a tragic way, we accept it as fate,” she said.

Norahimah, her husband and their three children – Fatimatulzahrah, 17, Seri Khadijah Aqilah, 13, and Rufaidatul Asyariyah, 10, died at the scene, while a son, five-year-old Muhammad Assyakrawi, died on the way to the hospital.

Another son, Abdullah, 15, is in the intensive care unit of Hospital Segamat. The eldest son, Abdul Rahman, 19, did not join the trip.

The crash occurred at 6.37pm on Friday when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) coming from the direction of Kuantan slowed down due to roadworks, but a trailer behind it failed to stop in time and hit the back of the SUV.

The trailer, laden with sand, then entered the opposite lane and collided with the MPV carrying the family. Two other cars were also involved in the accident.

The trailer driver suffered serious injuries, while the occupants of the SUV and the two cars escaped unhurt.

Segamat district police chief Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah appealed to those with information on the incident to contact the Segamat Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at 07-932 5811.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Bandar Baru Segamat Fire and Rescue Station chief Mazuki Ismail said two fire engines and an emergency medical rescue vehicle with 15 personnel rushed to the scene of the accident.

The operation ended at 9.34pm, he said.
