Woman in Kanowit found dead after snake bite

KANOWIT: A 48-year-old woman was found dead after being bitten by a snake while looking for snails in Sungai Ulu Machan near here on Sunday (Sept 3).

Kanowit OCPD Deputy Supt Tega Bilong said that the victim, Florence Galu, had, at about 4pm on Sept 2, gone to Sungai Ulu Machan, near Rumah Rundang, to look for river snails alone.

At around 7am the next morning, after learning that the victim had failed to return home, the longhouse chieftain and other residents rushed to search for her.

They managed to find her body 13 hours later at 8.15pm by the Sungai Ulu Machan riverbank.

"The result of the investigation found that the victim was bitten by a snake on the right wrist," Tega added.

According to him, three policemen took more than two hours using land and river routes to reach the scene to conduct the investigation.

The victim's body was buried according to Iban custom.
