JAKARTA: Despite the differences of opinions, Asean will maintain its principle of centrality and neutrality for regional stability, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic).

The Prime Minister said the regional body was clear in its position that the region should maintain centrality, peace and neutrality.

"What is important, is that Asean countries, we have consensus.

"Some may have some shift of preferences, but as Asean we maintain that neutrality," he told reporters at the conclusion of his visit to attend the 43rd Asean Summit and other related summits here on Thursday (Sept 7).

Anwar argued that that was why major world superpowers could be present at the summit including those who have 'differences', including the United States, Russia, China, and India.

"We allow them to express their views, despite their strong differences, even between the US and Russia, or US and China.

"We maintain that this forum should be for engagement and not for debates," he added.

On the economic cooperative, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that he saw many positive developments due to the Asean summit.

"Our economic cooperation became its top highlight, for instance, China prepared additional funds.

"US announced the US-Asean Centre in Washington D.C.

"Australia also provide a fund for the digital sector while India announces special assistance in various sectors as well."

"So, I can see many positive developments as there are concrete measures to expedite investments," added Anwar.
