Duo plead guilty to stealing drinks and perfume 'to make some money'

IPOH: The hope of making some extra cash led to two men being jailed and fined for stealing canned coffee and perfume from a convenience store.

Department store promoter Muhammad Shamsuddin Mohd Zakirin, 30, and hotel worker Muhammad Syahril Iman Razman Hayaddi, 22, were sentenced to eight months' jail and fined RM2,500 each by a Magistrate's Court here on Thursday (Sept 7).

The jail term is to run from the date of arrest, Sept 2.

Magistrate Siti Nora Sharif also said if they failed to pay the fine, they would face a further three months in jail.

According to the charge sheet, the accused stole one canned drink and four bottles of fragrance of various brands from a convenience store on Lebuh Perajurit, Taman Ipoh Boulevard Timur, at 12.18am on Sept 2.

They were charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine upon conviction. Both pleaded guilty.

Muhammad Shamsuddin was also charged under the same section for stealing a canned drink at 8.58am on Aug 31 at the same store.

For this, he was sentenced to eight months' jail and fined RM2,500, in default three months' jail.

The two were represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Nurul Syuhada Mohd Yusof, who asked the court to impose a shorter prison sentence as her clients had to look after their parents and siblings.

“They earn between RM1,300 and RM1,500 monthly and have promised not to steal again,” she said.

When Siti Nora asked the accused why they stole, they replied that they wanted to sell the items to make some money as their salaries were not sufficient.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Aqilah Syaza Ariffin asked the court for a jail sentence as a lesson not to repeat the offence.

Both accused failed to pay the fine.
