JOHOR BARU: Eligible voters working in Singapore have been urged to return home on polling day this Saturday (Sept 9) so that they can take part in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections.
Pasir Gudang PKR committee member Danny Tan Peng Chye said his team has conducted a programme at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) here as a last-leg effort to woo voters.
"We have one day left before the big day on Sept 9, so we hope that we can get as many votes as we can, especially from those who are working in Singapore.
"We want those who are free on that day to return home, as every single vote counts," he said when contacted on Thursday (Sept 7).
Tan added that the programme saw the participation of 30 other Pasir Gudang PKR members who have been distributing flyers on the by-elections.
"There are also those who are not aware that we are in the midst of by-elections as they are too focused on their daily lives.
"There are also youths who asked how they can register as voters (and) we told them there is no need to register.
"All they need to do is check their IC number on MySPRSemak to know their voting centre," he said, adding that the programme started on Wednesday (Sept 6) and ends on Friday (Sept 8).
"We conduct it from 5pm to 8pm to target Johoreans who are returning from work," he said.
Meanwhile, Johor Bersatu information chief Muhammad Islahuddin Abas said Perikatan Nasional would continue with its current campaign strategy by appealing to the general public, especially the Chinese voters.
"We have no plans to target those working in Singapore, but we hope that our message will reach them.
"So far, our campaign has received positive feedback from the Malay and Indian voters. Our current focus right now is wooing votes from the Chinese community," he said.
Muhammad Islahuddin, who is also a Perikatan Youth committee member, said he hoped Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's recent discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the Kuala Lumpur High Court would be able to win over voters to the Opposition side.
