JOHOR BARU: Johor MIC will be preparing 100 vehicles to ferry elderly people to the polling centres on Sept 9 for the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections.
MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan (pic) said that was based on the post-mortem report that the party received from the previous six state elections, where the service was not provided.
"We have learned from our previous mistakes where we did not provide a transportation service for the elderly group in Selangor and Negri Sembilan.
"If not, I personally believe that we could have won in constituencies such as Ijok and Bukit Melawati, as these areas have many elderly people.
"So for these by-elections, I have requested the Johor MIC and Pulai MIC to provide 100 vehicles equipped with wheelchairs to carry those in need to the polling centres from their homes and back," he said.
He said this when met after visiting the Indian Heritage Centre at the Arulmigu Rajamariamman temple here on Thursday (Sept 7).
Asked to comment on the Indian community's support for the Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional candidates, Saravanan said that the response had been positive.
"This is based on the ceramah that we have organised during the campaign period.
"But at the same time, I would not say there have been no challenges, but the majority have been very welcoming of the unity candidate," he added.
Meanwhile, on the visit, Saravanan said that every temple should emulate what had been done at the Arulmigu Rajamariamman temple.
"We don't want people to come to the temple only for religious purposes but also to learn about the culture and heritage of the Indian community," he added.
