PM: Malaysia to work closely with Asean, UN on peaceful solution in Myanmar

JAKARTA: Malaysia has expressed renewed commitment to work closely with the United Nations and Asean on efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Myanmar issue, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

This was expressed during the Prime Minister's meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during the 43rd Asean Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday (Sept 7).

"Both sides discussed issues of mutual interest including Asean-UN cooperation, Palestine and Myanmar," said Anwar.

Earlier, Guterres said he remained "deeply concerned" over the worsening political, humanitarian and human rights situation in Myanmar, a nation engulfed by conflict since a 2021 military coup.

"I reiterate my urgent call on the military authorities of Myanmar to listen to the aspirations of its people, release all political prisoners and open the door to a return to democratic rule," he said.

Malaysia had also expressed similar concerns over the lack of substantial progress in the five-point peace plan for Myanmar.

Myanmar needed to fulfil its obligation as an Asean member state and adhere to the provisions of the grouping's charter, Anwar said.

Later, Anwar will attend the closing ceremony of the summit and witness the formal handover of the Asean chairmanship to Laos.
