Sabah Umno hails decision to free Bung and wife of graft charges

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno has welcomed the decision to drop the graft charges against Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin and his wife Datin Seri Zizie Izette Abdul Samad.

Sabah Umno Information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said the decision by the Kuala Lumpur High Court to acquit and discharge Bung Moktar and Zizie Izette on Thursday (Sept 7) showed that justice had been served.

"Bung Moktar and his wife were given a just chance to defend themselves and justice has stood on their side," he said in a statement.

The Libaran MP said Bung Moktar and Zizie Izette had cooperated with the law and defended themselves in court over these cases.

Suhaimi said Sabah Umno would continue to support and stand with its chief Bung Moktar in his political endeavours as they believe he is a man of integrity.

"He can focus on strengthening our party and serving the people now that his court case is settled," he said.

Earlier in the day, the court allowed the revision application made by the Kinabatangan MP and his wife to reverse an order for them to enter their defence in a RM2.8mil corruption case.

Judge Azhar Abdul Hamid said that it was a fit and proper case for the court to exercise its revisionary power under Section 323 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

He said after examining the records of the proceedings, the court found that there was no evidence that prosecution witnesses 24 and 25 had given money to Bung Moktar through his wife.

He said therefore, the decision of the Sessions Court to call for Bung Moktar and Zizie Izette's defence was a miscarriage of justice.
