JAKARTA: The international community cannot remain silent on the conflicts happening in Myanmar, Russia-Ukraine, North Korea and Palestine, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said Malaysia was concerned over the situation in North Korea.
The incessant launching of ballistic missiles, and nuclear programme clearly violated United Nation Security Council’s resolution, he added.
He also said that Asean could not ignore the concerns in Myanmar.
"And I don’t think we in this forum could choose to ignore the concerns of the neighbours of countries in this region.
"We have to handle more than 200,000 refugees (from Myanmar).
"We also reject regression in Ukraine and call for meaningful dialogue to reach an amicable resolution.
"But I want to take note here, the concern of many of us, not said publicly, about the disproportionate treatment in regard to the recent conflict in Ukraine, and the 75-year conflict in the occupied Palestinian territory," he said at the 11th East Asia Summit held in conjunction with the 43 Asean Summit and other related summits here on Thursday (Sept 9).
US vice-president Kamala Harris, Chinese premier Li Qiang, and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the summit here, offering an opportunity for direct, high-level diplomacy between the rivals.
The international community, he further said, could not disregard Israel's continuous assault against the fundamental rights, livelihoods and dignity of the Palestinians of all faiths in their own land.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the global rise of fascism and Islamophobia.
"We reiterate our position that the defamation of any religion is an infringement of human rights, and derogation of the right to religion and belief.
"And I think this forum with the presence of all prominent leaders must attempt to try and resolve these problems, issues these days," noted Anwar.
He said that the prevailing geopolitical dynamics make it imperative for the EAS participating countries to strengthen their commitments to the EAS fundamental principles.
"In keeping with the objectives of preserving peace, prosperity and stability in the Asia-Pacific in the Indian regions, we call our partners to work together with Asean, to implement the four key areas of the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific; namely maritime cooperation, connectivity, sustainable development goals (SDGs), and economic cooperation," he said.
