KOTA KINABALU: Sabahans have expressed hope that the visit by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah to the state will spur efforts to improve public infrastructure in Sabah, says Karamunting assemblyman George Hiew Vun Zin.

He said throughout the tour, people including those in Sandakan, waited for hours to meet the Royal Couple.

“Many people also took the opportunity to share their concerns with the King about infrastructure problems in their areas, including the terrible road conditions,” Hiew said.

He said although many roads along the Royal Couple’s tour were patched up and repaired, there were other roads which were in dire need of repair.

He added that it was important that key infrastructure such as roads, water and electricity supply was improved to attract investments and tourism to Sabah.

Meanwhile, many Sabahans took to social media to share their experiences meeting Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah, as well as the prince and princesses.

Some said they managed to take selfies with the King while others shared videoclips of the Queen performing the Sumazau.

They also wrote of the royal entourage purchasing foodstuff from local markets known as tamu.

The Kembara Kenali Borneo tour, from Sept 3 to 13, starting in Tawau, Sabah, and ending in Telok Melano, Sarawak, involves a distance of 2,154km via the Pan Borneo Highway which connects Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.

The King and Queen’s Kembara Kenali Borneo journey would reach almost 1,000km when they arrived in Lawas, the northernmost town in Sarawak yesterday.

According to Bernama, the town, famous for the production of tahai fish or smoked tamban fish, is the first stop of the Kembara Kenali Borneo convoy into the Land of Hornbills.
