JOHOR BARU: Voters in Pulai and Simpang Jeram have shown the rest of the country that there is no "green wave" in the south, only a "red and blue" one, says Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah Wee Tse.
The Pulai PKR division chief said Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the by-elections was a strong message that Johor was not a place for those who played up the 3R (race, religion and royal institution) issues.
"Johor 'tetap' Johor. (Johor is still Johor)
"There is no ‘green wave’ here because there is a red and blue fortress blocking it," said Puah at a press conference at Pakatan’s supporters camp in Taman Dahlia here on Saturday (Sept 9).
Blue and red were also synonymous with Johor as they are the colours of the state flag.
"This is a win for a more moderate Malaysia," he added.
Pakatan had won both the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat in Johor, said the Election Commission.
Former Johor state speaker Suhaizan Kayat won the Pulai parliamentary by-election with a majority of 18,641 votes.
He obtained 48,283 votes while his opponents; Perikatan Nasional’s Zulkifli Jaafar, had 29,642 votes; and independent Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi received 528 votes.
In Simpang Jeram, Pakatan candidate Nazri Abdul Rahman the by-election with a 3,514 majority.
Nazri received 13,844 votes while Perikatan Nasional's Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya received 10,330 votes while Independent candidate S. Jeganathan gathered 311 votes.
