‘Leadership will decide fate of Melaka lawmaker’

MELAKA: The fate of an Umno state lawmaker who has been frequenting Opposition party events will be decided by the party’s top leadership, says Melaka Umno chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

The Chief Minister said a supreme council meeting would be held soon to decide what to do with Rembia assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis (pic).

“He (Muhammad Jailani) submitted his resignation directly to the party’s disciplinary board, and I am not aware of it.

“Let the supreme council make the decision,” he said when met at the launch of a Mustafa Jewellery outlet at a shopping mall here yesterday.

Muhammad Jailani, who was formerly with PKR, was among the four assemblymen in the state who pulled their support, leading to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan state government in March 2020.

He was sacked from PKR a month later and rejoined Umno in January 2021.

He was a Melaka executive councillor in charge of tourism when Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali was chief minister.

However, Muhammad Jailani was dropped from the state exco when Ab Rauf took over as Chief Minister earlier this year.

Muhammad Jailani criticised Ab Rauf’s appointment and said he did not support him as Chief Minister.

He was recently seen frequenting Perikatan Nasional events, namely in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections.

On Sept 6, it was reported that he had requested the Umno disciplinary board to give him the sack.
