New Simpang Jeram rep gets straight to work

Victory lap: Nazri meeting with his constituents in Muar, Johor.

MUAR: Addressing the traffic congestion problem and the rising cost of living are among the issues on which the people of Simpang Jeram want their new assemblyman to focus.

Storekeeper Amir Mohamed, 38, hopes that the assemblyman, Nazri Abdul Rahman, will push for more initiatives to be introduced at the state level to address the rising cost of living.

“I work in the supermarket, and I can see very clearly how fast and significantly the prices of goods have gone up. I understand that is the issue that is happening everywhere, but I hope the assemblyman will still help,” he said.

Another problem affecting many in Simpang Jeram is heavy congestion, especially along main roads such as Jalan Bakri and Jalan Sungai Abong, he said.

“The congestion problem has become worse over the years as the population in the constituency has increased,” he said.

Echoing similar sentiments was housewife Alice Tan, 40, who said the congestion problem makes it difficult for her to carry out her day-to-day tasks.

“The congestion is very unpredictable here, making it difficult for us to plan our routine and avoid getting stuck in traffic,” she said.

“I hope this is something the new assemblyman will prioritise during his term.”

Earlier, Nazri, who won the seat with a 3,514 majority on Saturday, visited two kopitiam and a warung here, where he spent some time talking to the people.

“I decided to meet the people on the first day to personally thank them for their support.

“I will take one day of rest to regain my strength, as we have just had two weeks of intense campaigning.

“After that, I will continue meeting the people to not only thank them but to also listen to their woes,” he said, adding that he is expected to be sworn in as the assemblyman in the next few days.

Nazri added that among the things he would like to focus on are addressing flood issues, providing more facilities for young people and looking into the welfare of the elderly.

“I will also make sure that the Rahmah initiative that was initiated by the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub will be continued,” he said.

Nazri was the head of the engineering department of the Muar Municipal Council before taking early retirement to run in the election.
