Adaptation plan to address climate risks

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Adaptation Plan on climate change will focus on measures in five priority areas: public health; agriculture and food security; forestry and biodiversity; water resources and security; as well as infrastructure and cities.

The plan would address the country’s current and future vulnerabilities to the effects of climate change, according to the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) Mid-Term Review released by the Economy Ministry yesterday.

“These measures will bolster adaptive capacities in the priority areas and strengthen a climate-resilient society. Strategies to manage heat-related impacts, such as heat stress, heat stroke and heat exhaustion, will be incorporated into the National Adaptation Plan.

“Among the initiatives to be implemented are increasing green spaces and tree coverage, improving urban planning to reduce the urban heat island effect and evaluating all activities in managing heat-related impacts,” said the review.

According to the Mid-Term Review, the National Adaptation Plan would also cover heat action plans and early warning systems to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities.

Flood mitigation programmes, said the Mid-Term Review, would also be given greater emphasis, adding that a study on the efficacy of nature-based solutions would be conducted. — Bernama
