Cops arrest man over theft of Ampang Jaya mosque donation box

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested an unemployed man in connection with the theft of a mosque donation box.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail said they received a report from the mosque bilal (person who recites the call to prayer) on Monday (Sept 11).

"The 25-year-old bilal, who is also a mosque committee member, claimed he was looking at CCTV footage at 6.49am on Monday and saw a man lurking in the corridor of the mosque at Taman Nirwana here and taking the donation box.

"He estimated that at least RM500 had been taken," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 12).

He said at around 5pm on the same day, police arrested a 33-year-old man at a house at Taman Angsana Hilir Kuala Lumpur.

"We also seized at least RM101 in cash and clothes believed to have been used during the incident.

"Checks revealed the suspect has 10 prior records for criminal and drug offences," he said, adding that urine tests on the suspect also came back positive for methamphetamines.

He said the suspect has been remanded to help with further investigations.

"We have classified the case as theft," he said.
