KUALA LUMPUR: There is no need for a referendum to ascertain the sentiment of Umno grassroots regarding cooperation with DAP, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"Why do we need a referendum? There is no need for a referendum," said the Uno president Zahid at a press conference after attending the Malaysia International Halal Showcase at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (Sept 13).
He was responding to Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil, who said on Tuesday (Sept 12) that a referendum should be carried out on Umno grassroots members on their willingness to cooperate with DAP.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said calls for a referendum were merely Isham's personal view.
Isham had been against Umno working with DAP, saying that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had decreed for a unity government to be formed but not about cooperating with Pakatan Harapan in polls.
Isham also claimed that he and several other party leaders might be booted out after the Umno supreme council meets on Wednesday (Sept 13) night.
"It is up to the party's leadership and the supreme council. My struggle has been sincere towards religion, race and country instead of personal gain," added Isham.
