KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's government will remain even if Pakatan Harapan and Umno stop cooperating, says Pejuang president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
He said the unity government would still command a majority in Parliament if it stops cooperating with Umno, which has 26 MPs.
"There are enough for Anwar and his unity government – but the caveat is that Perikatan Nasional should not accept these 26 Umno MPs," said Mukhriz during a press conference in Mont Kiara here on Wednesday (Sept 13).
Mukhriz also proposed for Perikatan and Pakatan to cooperate with a confidence and supply agreement (CSA).
"Or join the unity government and replace Umno," said Mukhriz.
"Of course there are differences between Pakatan and Perikatan. But, if they can put those differences aside and work for the betterment of the country I think all of us will be very happy," added the former Jerlun MP.
Presently, Anwar has the support of 147 MPs, consisting of 81 from Pakatan, Barisan (30), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (23), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (six), Warisan (three), two independent MPs and one each from Parti KDM and PBM.
Anwar is one MP short of the 148 for a two-thirds majority after Muda retracted support for the unity government.
Mukhriz said he hoped more MPs would voice disagreement on the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"It is as if our legal system is one-sided. It used to be selective prosecution now it's selective acquittal," said Mukhriz.
