STOP using issues related to race, religion and royalty (3R) as a reason for selective persecution and preventing people from exercising “silent dissent” against the government, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
During the debate on the 12th Malaysia Plan mid-term review (12MP MTR), Muhyiddin (PN-Pagoh) said in order to build a civilised nation, it is important for government leaders to be able to fulfil their promises, care for the people’s well-being and handle economic matters properly.
He added, leaders should be able to fulfil their promises, hold on to the principles of integrity and protect the people’s welfare and their freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.
“Based on this principle, I urge the government to stop investigating and prosecuting based on 3R to prevent dissenting views from the people,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
Muhyiddin, the former prime minister, said he has been investigated by the police several times and faced criminal charges solely because he was voicing the concerns of the Malays and Muslims.
“A Malay leader like me is considered a criminal just because I spoke up for the interest of Malays and Islam,” he added.
He said while Malaysia has long been free from the clutches of British colonialism, the policies of the Madani government are worse than the policies of the colonials.
“I pray that our country will always remain peaceful, and its multiracial and multireligious people can live together peacefully and harmoniously,” he added.
Muhyiddin is expected to face another round of questioning today over a speech he made during the Johor by-elections that contained elements that touched on 3R.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said investigators are expected to see Muhyiddin again over an alleged statement he made during a ceramah in Simpang Jeram, Johor.
