KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia Day should be celebrated at all levels of society to bring more appreciation towards this important day, says Datuk Ewon Benedick.
He said Malaysia Day should be celebrated by all Malaysians regardless of race, religion and whichever state they come from, just like how the National Day was observed and celebrated.
"It is also important that the formation of the federation of Malaysia and the significance of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) are taught in schools during History lessons so that the spirit of Malaysia can be instilled properly," Benedick said.
The Upko president and Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister said these are some aspects of Malaysia Day which should be given more focus and appreciated on a bigger scale.
"In the context of Sabah and Upko, we will continue to play a significant role in ensuring that the MA63 is fulfilled as the agreement was the basis of the formation of this country," he said.
Benedick said this in a statement in conjunction with the 60th Malaysia Day that is celebrated in Kuching, Sarawak.
"In these 60 years of the formation of Malaysia, our country has made various successes in numerous sectors," said the Penampang MP and Kadamaian assemblyman.
He said there were, however, still many issues and challenges to be addressed especially in terms of economic and infrastructural development.
"These developments depend on how far we are able to stay united, practise mutual respect and work together as Malaysians," said Benedick.
He hopes all Malaysians would continue to live as one in unity, harmony and prosperity so that the nation can continue to grow progressively.
