Contractor to be called up, says JAINJ after mosque’s ceiling ‘collapses’

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) has called up the contractor in the development of the Taman Pulai Indah mosque following an incident involving the mosque's ceiling.

Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said that the incident occurred last Thursday (Sept 14) at around 10.30pm when no visitors were around.

“The contractors were in the midst of removing the cornice ceiling when suddenly two of the panels fell.

“There is a bit of confusion claiming that all of the ceiling has suddenly fallen, which is not true; the ceiling was on schedule to be removed.

“The good news is that there were no casualties, and it occurred after the Isyak prayer was over,” he said after visiting the mosque here on Saturday (Sept 16).

He said this when asked to comment on a video being circulated on social media claiming that the ceiling of the mosque has collapsed.

The mosque was developed back in 2015 and completed in 2017; it is currently in the middle of upgrading works, he added.

“For the time being, all prayer activities will be conducted in the open area outside the main hall and under the tent provided.

"JAINJ, together with the Public Works Department, will conduct the repair work as soon as the investigations into the case are over,” he said.

Mohd Fared added that the full extent of the damage is still under investigation.
