PETALING JAYA: The option to join Perikatan Nasional was never discussed, says Muda's secretary-general Amir Hadi.
This came after Gerakan chief Datuk Dominic Lau said he wanted to propose for Muda to join the coalition in the upcoming Perikatan leadership meeting.
"Muda has never submitted any applications to join Perikatan, be it officially or unofficially," Amir said in a statement on Saturday(Sept 16).
"Any statement linking Muda's participation in Perikatan is not from Muda and does not represent Muda," he added.
He said Muda was committed to being the third force in Malaysian politics, providing checks and balances to the government and opposing extreme race and religious sentiments played up by politicians for their own interest.
Lau reportedly said that Muda's agenda and aspirations align with Perikatan's anti-corruption stance.
He believed the two Muda elected representatives should not relinquish their respective parliamentary and state seats.
He said Gerakan believed that Muda could be with Perikatan as a component party or an ally in Friends of Perikatan due to their common anti-corruption stance.
While Gerakan welcomes Muda's participation in Perikatan, he said there were procedures to be followed when admitting the party to the coalition.
Last week, Muda announced that it would quit the unity pact, and the party's chief and sole MP, Syed Saddiq, had also moved his seat to the Opposition bloc in the Dewan Rakyat.
This was a sign of protest against the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the Yayasan Akalbudi case.
