KUCHING: Sarawak will host the World Water Congress and Exhibition in 2028 after presenting a successful bid in France, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg (pic).
The Premier said this was a significant milestone for the state, especially during the 60th Malaysia Day celebration.
"Sarawak has made history for Malaysia and Asean as Kuching has been selected to host the congress.
"This is a world congress that is expected to attract 10,000 participants from 80 countries," he said at the national-level Malaysia Day celebration here on Saturday (Sept 16) night.
Abang Johari said the event would be held at the expanded Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.
He said it was expected to generate an economic outcome to spearhead regional collaboration in Asean.
"It will also position Sarawak as a hub for sustainability and innovation in the global water industry.
"So Kuching will be known to the whole world," he added.
Separately, Abang Johari said the state government appreciated the efforts of the Federal Government to restore the rights of Sarawak and Sabah as enshrined in the Federal Constitution and Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
"Sarawak might be accused of being parochial in our demands, but the people of Sarawak only want Sarawak’s rights and have no wish to grab the rights of others," he said.
He said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government would give full support the unity government for stability until the next election.
"Although Sarawak and Sabah are demanding several matters under MA63, it doesn't mean we can't work with Peninsular Malaysia to strengthen unity," he added.
