42-year-old man dies, five others injured in accident near Pontian


PONTIAN: A 42-year-old man was killed while five others were injured in an accident involving two cars at KM1.1 of Jalan Permas - Tanjung Bin here.

Pontian OCPD Supt Mohammad Shofee Tayib said that they received a report about the incident at about 11.50pm on Saturday (Sept 16).

"One of the cars was heading towards Lorong Haji Sakyon Darat from Lorong Haji Sakyon Laut while the other car was heading towards Permas from Tanjung Bin.

"Based on initial investigations, the two cars collided when they reached a four-way junction, which does not have a stop sign.

"Due to the impact of the collision, both of the cars ended up in a drain at the side of the road," he said in a statement here.

He noted that a 42-year-old man, who was the driver of one of the cars, was killed at the scene after succumbing to serious head injuries.

"Four others from the same car was also injured and have been sent to Hospital Pontian.

"The driver of the other car was also injured and sent to a private hospital," he said.

Meanwhile, Pontian Baru fire and rescue department operation commander Mohd Hasnan Abd Rahman said that eight firemen were deployed to the scene upon receiving a call about the incident.

"One of the victims was stuck in the car and we managed to take him out with a special tool.

"However, he was later pronounce dead by medical officers at the scene," he said.
