Hall at Pontian school severely damaged by fire

PONTIAN: A hall at a religious school here was engulfed in a fire that broke out in early Sunday (Sept 17) morning.

Pontian fire and rescue department operation commander Mahadir Mamat said that they received a distress call about the fire at SMKA Bugisiah in Kampung Tompok Laut at about 4.13am.

"A total of 16 firemen from the Pontian and Renggit fire stations were deployed upon receiving the call from one of the school's staff,"

He added that upon arrival, department personnel found that the school's hall was engulfed by the fire.

"Thankfully, there was no-one in the building. No deaths or injuries were reported," he said.

He added that the operation to put out the fire ended at about 10.16am

"About 90% of the building was damaged in the fire. We are still investigating the cause of the fire and the estimated total losses," he said.
