PETALING JAYA: It is inappropriate to hold a rally which aimed to sow disunity on Malaysia Day, says Sarawak PKR's youth wing.
In a statement on Sunday (Sept 17), Sarawak PKR Youth chief Chiew Choon Man said it was clear that the rally was meant to disrespect and disrupt Malaysia Day celebrations, which were supposed to be celebrated harmoniously and with unity.
Chiew said while Sarawak PKR Youth respects the right to assembly, Malaysia Day should not be tainted with a demonstration meant to insult the country’s leaders.
“Sarawak PKR Youth is of the view that organising a protest on a historic day such as Malaysia Day is disrespectful to the spirit of the day and is meant to divide the people,”said Chiew.
Malaysia Day, said Chiew, symbolises unity and should have been used as a platform to strengthen the relationship between the people.
“We should celebrate the country’s achievements and development since its formation,” he said.
“We urge Perikatan Nasional youth to stop all actions and statements that does not bring any benefits to the country,” he said while adding that holding the protest on Malaysia Day hindered efforts to promote unity among Malaysians.
“We urge Perikatan's youth wing to find an alternative solution such as holding dialogues to voice their concerns.
“Through meaningful discussions and mutual understanding, we will be able to overcome and resolve issues collectively, ensuring development and the prosperity of our beloved nation,” he said.
He also urged all Malaysians to prioritise national unity, adding that diversity is Malaysia’s strength.
On Saturday (Sept 16), the Save Malaysia rally concluded without any untoward incident.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said although the rally failed to comply with provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act, the police took every necessary step to ensure that it ran smoothly.
The rally began at around 1.15pm at Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru and ended near Sogo Kuala Lumpur at around 3.30pm.
