KOTA KINABALU: The streets of downtown Kota Kinabalu are usually busy, bit on Sept 16, it was livelier than usual with the state-level Malaysia Day celebrations held at the nearby Padang Merdeka.

The field was abuzz with music and colourful lights, culminating in a 10-minute fireworks display after the formal programmes were completed.

Thousands thronged the venue as they welcomed Sabah Yang di-Pertua Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and wife Toh Puan Norlidah RM Jasni as well as state ministers, assemblymen and other dignitaries.

The crowd was serenaded with patriotic songs by local artistes, both famous and the lesser known, and their voices captivated everyone present.

The main highlight was a beautifully-choreographed song and dance performance, where a history on the formation of Malaysia was portrayed within the show with a background video clip explaining the details.

In between, performers managed to take the crowd on a walk down memory lane that showed changing times of people, fashion, lifestyles, economic activities and more in their performance.

It was a wonderfully created piece that showed people of all races living together harmoniously, as they swayed, moved and danced to the beat of various cultural music, further showcasing how beautiful Malaysia is ethnically and culturally.

The crowd was clapping and dancing to the music, while cheering the show along as well.

Although this year’s official Malaysia Day celebration was held in Kuching, Sarawak, Sabah’s own event on the auspicious day did not fall short of expectations.

Earlier, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had reminded the public to stay united and protect this peace and harmony enjoyed for so long.

He said togetherness was the key to continued development for the state and country as Malaysia celebrated the 60th anniversary of its formation.
