PASIR GUDANG: More than 13,000 volunteers are expected to be part of this year’s national World Clean-up Day (WDC) celebration, says Johor Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) director Cairul Hisham Jalaluddin.
The company managed to register 1,451 volunteers in Johor alone, and all will be going to 58 hotspots across the state to conduct clean-up programmes, he added.
“Last year, we managed to get more than 10,000 volunteers nationwide, so for this year, we hope we will be able to attract more people to come out and be part of this environmental programme.
“We have also identified 58 hotspots to conduct these clean-up programmes in coastal areas, river banks, and public gathering areas,” he said when met by reporters after the WDC officiating ceremony at Kampung Pasir Gudang Baru, here, on Sunday (Sept 17).
The WDC was first organised back in 2020 in Kampung Pendas Laut, Gelang Patah, and this year, Kampung Pasir Gudang Baru was chosen due to its agro-tourism activities, he added.
“The majority of the villagers are working at a mussel farm nearby, which is the largest producer of mussels in the country.
“So we wanted to instil awareness among our volunteers of how a clean environment can benefit and provide an income to the people,” he said, adding that WDC will run from Sept 16 until Sept 24.
The programme is also in line with the International Coastal Clean-up celebration and the Johor Bersih initiative organised by the Johor State Government, he added.
