KUALA LUMPUR: City police have issued nearly 6,000 traffic summonses on the third day of the latest stint of the Respect Traffic Laws campaign.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Sarifudin Mohd Salleh said they issued 5,953 summonses on Sunday (Sept 17) with the bulk of them being for traffic obstruction (4,647).
"Our personnel also issued 203 summonses for vehicles that stopped in the pedestrian zebra crossings as well as vehicles that stopped beyond the white lines.
"106 summonses were issued to locals for operating a vehicle without a licence. Four foreigners were also issued summonses for the same offence," he said when contacted on Monday (Sept 18).
He said 41 summonses were also issued to motorists for beating the red-light and five to those who stopped in the yellow box.
"We also issued 927 summonses for various other offences.
"In total our personnel comprising 704 personnel conducted 16 operations at various locations," he said, adding that 11 people were also arrested during the incident.
He said police arrested five individuals under Section 45 of the Road Transport Act as well as one under Section 50(3) of the same Act for driving while under the influence and unlawful interference and importuning respectively.
"We also arrested one individual respectively for vehicle theft, possession of a psychotropic substance, drug consumption, drug possession, and drug trafficking," he said.
It was reported that the KL cops are coming down hard on traffic offenders in a large-scale operation city-wide that began on Friday (Sept 15) which would go on until the end of this month.
At least 16 locations within KL will be the focus of the operation code-named Respect Traffic Laws, which involves about 1,000 police officers and personnel who will be on the lookout for those who flout traffic laws and regulations.
