Inappropriate to rally on Malaysia Day, says PKR man

PETALING JAYA: It was wholly inappropriate to hold a rally aimed at sowing disunity on Malaysia Day, says Sarawak PKR’s youth wing.

Its chief Chiew Choon Man said it was clear that the rally, organised by Perikatan Nasional youth leaders, was meant to disrespect and disrupt Malaysia Day celebrations.

He added that while Sarawak PKR Youth respects the right to assembly, Malaysia Day should not be tainted with a demonstration meant to insult the country’s leaders.

“Sarawak PKR Youth is of the view that organising a protest on a historic day such as Malaysia Day is disrespectful to the spirit of the day.

“The protest is meant to divide the people,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The Save Malaysia rally took place across the downtown area of Kuala Lumpur between 1.15pm and 3.30pm and culminated in a police report being lodged at the Dangi Wangi district police headquarters.

The rally was organised to criticise the discharge not amounting to an acquittal granted to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over 47 graft charges.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said afterwards the rally had concluded without any untoward incident.
