Malaysia Day: A celebration of history, harmony and diversity

KOTA KINABALU: The spirit of patriotism filled the air as thousands of people thronged the state-level Malaysia Day celebrations held at Padang Merdeka here.

The field was alive with music and colourful lights, apart from a 10-minute dazzling display of fireworks on Saturday night.

The crowds welcomed Sabah’s head of state, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and his wife, Toh Puan Norlidah RM Jasni, state ministers, assemblymen and other dignitaries.

The event started off with the singing of the national and state anthems followed by the flag-raising ceremony, flag handing-over ceremony, a montage on Sabah’s history followed by an array of programmes, including mini concerts.

The crowds were serenaded with patriotic-themed songs by local artistes, with the highlight of the evening being a beautifully choreographed dance and song performance showing the history of Malaysia’s formation.

Performers also brought the crowd down memory lane, featuring the changing times of the people, fashion, lifestyle and economic activities, among others, with people of all races living together harmoniously.

The crowds clapped, swayed and danced to the beat of cultural music.

Although this year’s official Malaysia Day celebration was held in Kuching, Sarawak, Sabah’s own celebration of this auspicious day did not fall short of expectations.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor reminded the public to stay united and protect the peace and harmony that we as Malaysians have enjoyed for so long.

He said togetherness was the key to continued development for the state and country as Malaysia celebrated the 60th anniversary of its formation.
