KOTA BHARU: General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade is getting an additional eight drone units to prevent the smuggling of goods and the entry of illegal immigrants at the border.

Its commander, SAC Sheik Azhar Sheik Omar (pic), said before this the GOF Southeast Brigade possessed two drone units.

He said drones were vital to transmitting accurate and quick information regarding criminal activities along the 144km Malaysia-Thailand border, adding that any information obtained would be sent to the nearest team for immediate action.

"God willing...with the government allocation, every inch of the country's border will be monitored more systematically and effectively," he told reporters after a retirees' gathering attended by 400 former members of the GOF, VAT69 and Senoi Praaq at the GOF 8th Battalion in Pengkalan Chepa here on Tuesday (Sept 19).

Four former GOF8 members, who had been injured during an operation against the Communists in the 1970s, also received donations of wheelchairs at the gathering.

Sheik Azhar also said the GOF Southeast Brigade thanked the Prime Minister and the Home Affairs Minister for approving an RM42 million allocation, covering expenses in five GOF battalions nationwide.

"For the Southeast Brigade, the provision has allowed as many as 16 static posts along the Sungai Golok to be built to provide some comfort to the members who are on duty, including better water sources and rooms.

"Each post is estimated to cost between RM50,000 and RM100,000, and they will definitely help each member feel more comfortable and work better," he said. Bernama
