KL cops nab nine in love scam syndicate bust

KUALA LUMPUR: Nine individuals, including a woman were detained for their alleged involvement in a love scam syndicate following three raids at Jalan P. Ramlee on Tuesday (Sept 20).

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said the syndicate used profile photos of foreigners on social media to dupe victims with messages of love based on a script.

"We believe the syndicate was running a love scam scheme on Facebook, Tinder, Instagram and WhatsApp.

"Victims who were duped were told to transfer funds to local bank accounts and overseas," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 20).

The syndicate was targeting victims from Malaysia, Singapore and China, Comm Allaudeen said.

"We seized various items including 24 mobile phones, seven laptops and a script used to dupe victims,”

Comm Allaudeen added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and added that the public should always be wary when using social media.

"Verify the authenticity of bank accounts via http://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule before making any transaction.

"The public can inform the police of any suspicious activity by calling the KL police operations room at 03-2146 0584/ 0585 or any nearest police station," he said.
