Speaker, PAC to visit Lumut for combat ship project update

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will make a joint working visit to Lumut, Perak on Oct 5 to check on the status of the Royal Malaysian Navy's littoral combat ship (LCS) project.

PAC chairman Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the visit was for the Speaker to gain insights on the progress report of the Defence Ministry project for the period from October last year to May this year.

The progress report is expected to be tabled during the first week of the Dewan Rakyat's meeting next month.

"We hope the Speaker will consider that the PAC report involving the progress report can be debated in the Dewan Rakyat after it is tabled," she said in a statement on Thursday (Sept 21).

The PAC had recommended in an earlier report tabled on Aug 4 last year that the ministry would have to provide a quarterly update on the status of the project.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on May 27 that the government had to complete the project as RM6bil had already been spent on it.

The Finance Ministry has also taken over the company responsible for the project, Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (BNS) via a special-purpose vehicle (SPV).
